Together with the emergence of Yunnan Hui communities which followed the main cultural trend of China,the Hui scholars of Yunnan in the late period of the Qing Dynasty began to interpret Confucianism in a rational way. In their comparative study of Islamic and Confucian works written in Chinese, the Hui scholars of Yunnan, while defending Islamism, analyzed the cultural similarities and differences of the two great religions as well as their relations of absorption and rejection.

In 1991, Dr. Dru C. Gladney of Hawaiian Research Center of the East-West Cultures published a book entitledMuslim Chinese: Ethnic Nationalism in the People's Republic. His “ethnographical description" of the village of Najiahu in Ningxia Autonomous Region has drawn the authors' attention. It is just in his "cultural writing" on Najiahu that Dr. Gladney put forward his proposition of "the Islamic revivalism in Sfi Community of the northwestern China". In the authors' opinion, however, this proposition leaves...
