The completeness of a stratigraphic section is defined as the fraction of time intervals of some specified length(t) that have left a record.The completeness of any section has a probabilistic character that it must take a value between one and zero because of the occurrence of hiatus.How to determine the completeness of a section is an unsolved difficult problem.Last ten years and more,several researchers proposed a few approaches to completeness determination such as ratio of long and short term sedimentation rates,compared thickness of a section with global average accumulation for that timespan,tiered trace fossils and paleomagnetic data methods.Despite some special requirements and limitations,these methods provide a firm fundation for future work.The completeness of a section plays an important role in interpretation of sedimentary facies,pattern analysis of organic evolution and studies of event or episodic sedimentation.The incompleteness of a section cannot give a precise chronostratigraphic correlation.It is suggested that holostratigraphy,based on high resolution event stratigraphy and global cyclostratigraphy and combined with biostratigraphy,magnetostratigraphy,chemostratigraphy and tectonic stratigraphy,be the mainstream of stratigraphy in the future.

The Pipe-Rocks or burrows Skolithos studied here are found in Lingqiu County, Shanxzi Province, North China. They are as abundant and magnificent as ones from other famous localities in the world. The Pipe-Rocks or burrows Skolithos studied here are found in Lingqiu County, Shanxzi Province, North China. They are as abundant and magnificent as ones from other famous localities in the world. The burrows Skolithos reported here occur in a set of clastic rocks dominated by the red sandstone, which were compared to the Neoproterozoic Qingbaikou System (1 000 800 Ma) in Yanshan Range previously. In this paper they are built a new formation, the Yuncailing Formation. It is disconformably overlain by the Maozhuang Formation of the Lower Cambrian and overlies the Wumishan or Gaoyuzhuang Formation of the Middle Proterozoic unconformably, with a thickness from some meters to more than 100 meters. The Pipe rocks or burrows are c.5~20 m thicken and occurs in the middle part of the Yunca iling formation. Based on their diagnosis, these burrows are well compared with Skolithos linearis Haldeman that is distributed in the Lower Cambrian. On the basis of studying and comparing results mentioned above, the burrow-bearing sequence of clastic rocks, i.e. Yuncailing Formation, should be assigned to the lower Cambrian and not the Neoproterozoic Qingbaikou System. Because the Yuncailing Formation underlies the Chanping Formation (or Fujunshan Formation) belonging to the early stage of the Early Cambrian in adjacent area, it means that this burrow bearing sequence will be the lowerest Cambrian rocks in the North China Platform possibly. Based on the presence of the Skolithos and other available depositional marks, it seems that the Yuncailing Formation was formed in the palaeoenvironment of delta facies.

山西灵丘地区产有十分丰富和壮观的管状岩 ,即Skolithos潜穴化石 ,它们可与国外产同类化石的一些典型地区相媲美。化石产于一套以紫红色砂岩为主的碎屑岩系中 ,文中称云彩岭组。云彩岭组位于前寒武系雾迷山组或高于庄组与寒武系毛庄组之间 ,前人将其归于新元古代早期的青白口系。笔者根据其中潜穴化石Skolithoslinearis的对比研究 ,将其归为早寒武世早期 ,具体层位在昌平组 (府君山组 )及其相当层位之下 ,因而是华北地区已知层位最低的寒武纪地层。根据该类化石的指相意义和上下层位相标志的研究 ,云彩岭组为一向上变浅的岩系 ,属三角州相沉积。
