    This paper deals with the theoretical and experimental investigation concerning the improvement of NC machine tool contouring accuracy by means of microproces sor-based control scheme. The theoretical model representing the relationship between the dynamic behavior and controller performance is obtained using the phase-plane δ technique. With the relationship developed, either a closed-loop proportional (P) or proportional-integral (PI) controller can be optimally designed to match the dynamic behavior and to reduce the contouring errors. Experiments were performed on a three-axis NC milling machine to prove the concept introduced. The controller design and the realization of the scheme are treated in detail.
