The results were as follows: (1) The content of H 2O 2 and MDA in litchi leaves increased under water stress. The increment in drought-resistant variety was less than in drought-sensitive variety. (2) Under water stress, the activity of peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, superoxide and glutathione reductase and the content of reduced glutathione in litchi leaves increased; the activity of catalase and the content of ascorbate decreased. However, the activity of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase increased in drought-resistant variety and decreased in drought-sensitive variety. The ability to scavenge active oxygen was higher in drought-resistant variety than in drought-sensitive variety.
