This thesis is a survey of Civil Aviation English, an ESP (English for Specific Purpose) English, especially with the highlight on the lexical characteristics of the professional language used in the two major aircraft systems, Boeing and Airbus.
Due to the lack of any existing corpus, a mini-corpus—aircraft system description corpus (a sub-corpus of Civil Aviation English Corpus—CAEC), has been compiled to conduct the research.
This paper discusses the importance of civil aviation English materials translation in the development of civil aviation industry,and its characteristics of scientif- icality,practicality,adaptability and time-priority.

It is hoped that the findings of the current study will be of some help toward a better understanding and easier mastery of the target language by the students and personnel related to this field.
It is also hoped that the research will be helpful for the design of best possible teaching materials and activities to help students comprehend and produce the target language appropriately.
This paper discusses the importance of civil aviation English materials translation in the development of civil aviation industry,and its characteristics of scientif- icality,practicality,adaptability and time-priority.On the basis of his work experience in the civil aviation industry,the author introduces some varying styles of translation accord- ing to different types of civil aviation materials a translator may have occasion to handle, which will be helpful in raising the standard of translation.
Giving English for civil aviation as an example, the author tries to probe into some language characteristics and translation ski lls of sc ientific English from the angles of grammar and terminology.Experience tells us that only when translators have a good command of technical knowledge & the art of language can they be able to translate with accurate understanding,sensitive analysis and precise expression.Translation skills come from practice and accumu lation.
