The Vehicle Route Guidance System is a kernel subsystem of Advanced Traveler Information System and one of important research content of Intelligent Transportation System. VRGS can guide traffic flow by providing the travelers with optimal route based on real-time traffic information.

Route Guidance System is an important component of ITS(Intelligent Transportation System). The System is the high-tech integrated system of applying vehicle autonomic location technology, GIS (Geographic Information System), database technology, computer technology, multimedia technology and contemporary communications technology.
In this paper, the research on the development of ITS is discussed first, then The structure and function of each module of RGS are outlined, Status quo of research on RGS is reviewed at home and abroad, the progress of related direction and the significance of route guidance algorithm in RGS is analyzed.
The key problems in the three main research fields including algorithm real time efficiency, dynamic route guidance algorithm and integration with traffic control system in route guidance system and their uptodate study developments were analyzed.
Combining analysis results and the possibility of practical application of route guidance system, several important problems in future research on route guidance algorithm were presented based on traveller psychology model, multiindex optimization, traffic flow forecast, more intelligent route guidance service and an algorithm model of distributed artificial intelligence.

This paper presents a new algorithm based on "Node deletion" to acquire k_reasonable alternative paths for dynamic route guidance systems. Compared with traditional k_shortest path algorithm and "overlapping penalty" algorithm, this algorithm is simple, fast and effective.
