While forward error correction (FEC) is often used in real time semi-re-liable transport, traditional reliable unicast transport protocols use automatic repeatrequests (ARQ) as their error control mechanism. However, performance of ARQin multicast transport is poor. This paper presents a new error control mechanismfor reliable multicast transport called integrated FEC (IFEC), which is a hybridscheme of FEC and ARQ. An analysis method was developed to compute the trans-fer time and network cost of this scheme, given arbitrary multicast tree topologyand packet loss probability. Its performance using analysis and simulations is stud-ied, the impacts of various parameters on performance are investigated. These pa-rameters include the number of packets per block, packet loss rate at routers,thenumber of redundant packets added by IFEC per block, and the number of receiversin the multicast group. Its performance with that of retransmission schemes is alsocompared. It is believed that FEC consumes more bandwidth. However,the study inthis paper shows that for reliable multicast, compared with retransmission, IFECnot only reduces transfer time, but also uses less bandwidth in most network envi-roments. Further more,the performance gap enlarges as the number of receivers in-creases which means IFEC has better scalability and is suitable for large multicastgroup.

对点对点通信,数据的可靠传输常使用自动重复请求(ARQ)技术,而前向纠错(FEC)多用于半可靠实时传输.然而,ARQ用于多目广播的性能不佳[1].本文提出一种新的可靠多目广播的差错控制方法—集成FEC,对其性能进行了理论分析和模拟研究,并与一般的重传方式进行了比较.研究表明:对于可靠多目广播,集成FEC与重传相比不仅可以减少传输时间,而且在多数网络环境下还会降低带宽需求.它们之间的性能差异随接收方数目的增加而扩大,即集成IFEC具有更好的可伸缩性,适于较大规模的广播组.
