Single units in the thoracic spinal gray matter responsive to the stimulationof the greater splanchnic nerve were recorded simultaneously with the viscerosoma-tic reflex discharge(VSR)recorded from an intercostal nerve.Since the thres-hold of VSR corresponds to that of A-delta fibres in the splanchnic nerve,thoseunits with threshold corresponding to that of VSR are regarded as A-delta unitsand those corresponding to that of the C-elevation in the VSR as C units.Wecould not confirm the finding of Pomeranz et al who reported that units responsiveto splanchnic A-delta volley were located in Rexed layer V.In the present work,the A-delta units were distributed widely and bilaterally in Rexed layersⅠ,Ⅱ,Ⅳ,Ⅴ,Ⅶ and Ⅷ.The C units were found bilaterally in layersⅡ,Ⅳ,Ⅴ,Ⅶ and Ⅷ.Convergence of the splanchnic and intercostal afferents occurredin 62 out of 64 units.Units inhibited by splanchnic volley were also observed.

Experiments were performed on 56 albino rats immobilized by tubocurarine. 88Pain sensitive neurons responsive to noxious stimuli with a specific pattern of discharge were recorded in MRF by glass microelectrodes. The effect of cerebroventricular injection of ACh in minute doses on the pain discharges of pain sensitive neurons in MRF was studied. The effect of cerebroventricular injection of ACh in minute doses on the pain discharges of pain sensitive neurons in MRF was studied. Resulis indicated that the effect of ACh was mainly inhibitory, but some excitatory effect was observed. These suggested that the ACh might activate cholinergic M-receptors on the wall of cerebral ventricles and then modulate painsen-sitive units in MRF through the medium of inhibitory or/and excitatory nervous connections, so that the transmission of pain signals in MRF was blocked and an analgesic effect produced. In addition, the results also indicated that other receptors may participate in the accomplishment of these effects.

The hypothalamus of cat was approached via transpharynx route underurethane-chloralose anesthesia.During the experiment the animal was immobi-lized by flaxedil and maintained by artificial ventilation.Unit activity of anteriorhypothalamus(AH)was recorded extracellularly with glass microelectrode toobserve the response to intracarotid injection of hypertonic sodium chloride solutionand stretch of left atrium.A total of 32 units with spontaneous discharge rate of1—13 imp/S were studied.Most of the units recorded from N.Supraopticus(SO)were excited by hypertonic solution and inhibited by atrial stretch,converselysome units were inhibited by hypertonic solution but excited by artial stretch.Following intracarotid injection of hypertonic solution,the discharge of 11 unitsin N.hypothalamic anterior-N.supraopticus(Ha-SO)increased by 61.6±37.0%(M±SE)and lasted for a minute.The discharge of units adjacent to Ha decreasedby 23.5±10.5% in response to left atrial stretch.With hypertonic stimulus,thespecific monophasic response was observed in the units located in Ha-SO,which may thus be considered as osmosensitive cells or Verney’s osmoreceptors.The units of Ha-SO located in 2.4—2.8mm from the middle line,i.e.medial toVerney’s osmoreceptors,showed convergent response to both stimuli tested.Thefeatures of discharge of AH units,with special reference to their mechanism of inte-gration and physiological significance,were briefly discussed.
