abstrac The us and them distinction in the field of ELT takes the form of native speakers and learners of English. This paper makes a sample analysis of the discourse of a unit in a reading textbook, pointing out that the textbook compilers can help reconstruct an implicit them which are culturally inferior. Also discussed are implications of transcending the stereotype of learners of English as created by the us type discourse.

Hans Robert Jauss is the leading figure of the movement of reception theory. The main aim of Jauss' reception theory is to found a new type of literary history. In 1979 Jauss wrote ‘The Poetic Text in the Evolution of Reading Horizon', in which he formulated a set of reading strategies on the basis of Gadamer's hermeneutics,which divided the reading process into three levels:‘sensory reading',‘interpretative reading' and ‘historical reading'.
