The amount of heat calculated from the exothermal peak is not uniquely determined by the density of the sample, but is linearly dependent on tan 6 at 70℃, which can be used as a measure of the amount of amorphous state within a sample. At this stage of crystallization imperfect crystalline regions are formed and an abrupt increase of density is observed.

The differential thermogram of the phenolic resin showed two exothermic peaks in the regions 140 to 145 ℃ and 155 to 160℃, the exact positions of these maxima depending on the heating rate. A heating rate of 10 to 20℃/min and sample weight of 1-3 mg were found to be most suitable for good resolution of the thermogram. The curing temperature of the liquid phenolic resin was slightly lower than that of powder phenolic resin. The heat of curing for the fresh phenolic resins commonly used in particleboard ranged from 55 to 65 cal./g.
