The authors proposed a new index based on Cody index,the new index,CSV(Community Structure Variation)index is between 0~1,as the improvement of Cody index,its description to the variation of community diversity along environmental gradient was closer to the actual circumstances. The result of CSV index analysis shows,that the obvious variation of community structure appeared at>40m sampling scale in canopy layer,whereas the sampling scale was>20m in shrub layer. The sampling scales for detecting the variation properties of species richness and community structure were different on the transect.The results of fractal analysis show that canopy layer had no scale dependence within 200m scale,tree regeneration layer exhibited scale dependence when observing scale <40m. The scale dependent properties of shrub layer showed strong variation at small scales and low heterogeneity at large scales.The strong changing scales(inflection points)of tree regeneration layer and shrub layer were 40m and 90~100m respectively.In this paper,sampling scale problem in ecological research is discussed as well.

diversity means the diversity between two communities,which is often used to analyze the gradient variation on environment.It reflects species replacement along environmental gradient,and it is more useful while there exists obvious ecological gradient in the research region.Changbai Mountain is very famous for its obvious altitutional vegetation type such as broadleaved Korean pine forest,dark coniferous forest,Ermam's birch forest,and tundra on the north slope.In this research,an altitutional treasect was set up on the north slope of Changbai Mountain,and twenty quadrats were located and measured at a vertical interval of 100 m between 700m and 2600m above mean sea level.By using Cody index,the β diversity among plant communities on the northern slope of Changbai Mountain was measured.The results showed that Cody index could express the relationships among the communities preferably.The peak values of Cody index along altitude gradient(700m and 800m,1000m and 1100m,1700m and 1800m,and 1900 m and 2000m)just matched the ecotones between different vegetation types.β diversity between communities was influenced by sampling areas.β diversity between communities nonlinearly increased as the sampling size increased.Less or more than 64m\+2 were two obvious sampling scales for β diversity measurement.Average β diversity between communities with the same altitude difference also increased with the increase of altitude difference,and the increase was almost in an “S” shape.The farther analysis showed that alittude difference of 800m and 1200m were two critical scales for the measurement of β diversity between communities.The variety of β diversity between communities with certain altitude difference with sampling area changing was also discussed in this paper,the results showed that,while sampling area increasing,the difference of β diversity between communities with certain altitude difference increased,and 64m\+2 was the inflexion of sampling area.It also indicated and confirmed that less or more than 64m\+2 were two obvious sampling scales for β diversity measurement.Ulteriorly,based on the analysis and the results,the merit and the shortcoming of Cody index were also discussed in this paper.
