The resistance of plants against rough environmental conditions is strengthened, and the survival of seedlings and rooted cuttings during transplanting is thus improved. The...

The effects of CO 2 enrichment on ornamental plant production are reviewed. CO 2 enrichment enhances the growth and development of most floral crops. The cut flower and cutting production of main floral crops and the quality of potted flowers are both improved, and the root development of cuttings is also influenced by CO 2 enrichment. The resistance of plants against rough environmental conditions is strengthened, and the survival of seedlings and rooted cuttings during transplanting is thus improved. The effects of CO 2 on ornamental plants are influenced by many factors, such as light intensity, photoperiods, air temperature, nutrition supplying and the developmental stages of plants. So all these factors should be adjusted accordingly during CO 2 fertilizing, and the culture method should also be changed to gain the greatest benefit. The effect of harvesting cuttings on the pot flower quality of mother plants were studied in Freedom Red and Freedom White poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd.).Plants were pinched in one of the two ways:① Removal of the apical meristems plus 2~3 full expanded leaves and could be used as a cutting;② Removal of the apical meristem plus all immature leaves with petiole remained.The results showed that harvesting cuttings did not reduce the visual quality of pot flower produced by mother plants with higher plant,bigger canopy and inflorescence diameter,longer shoot and node,more node and higher percentage of effective shoot.Self-propagated plantlets produced pot flowers of equal quality compared to purchased plantlets.So it is possible to produce plantlets by cutting.But the percentage of splitting was more than 50% in self-propagated cuttings.The mechanism of pinching position on visual quality and the splitting of self-propagated plantlets were discussed in relation to axillary bud sprouting and ontogenetic age,respectively.
