This paper explores the textual meaning of Sha ke speare’s The Tempest from the postcolonial perspective. Centering upon suc h key terms of postcolonialism as race, gender, power, Orientalism, the paper la ys bare the theme of colonialism in The Tempest at the following four planes : the historical and geographical evidence of the symbolic colonial significance of the central background of the island; the Orientalism reflected in the colon ial discourse of the colonizer; the distortedly represented image of the coloniz ed; the pathetic existence of the colonized. Through those analyses, the hypocri tical mask of traditional western humanism represented by Prospero is removed to the hilt and his nature of imperialism is fully exposed.

本文着力从后殖民的角度 ,重新探讨莎士比亚最后一部伟大浪漫传奇剧《暴风雨》的现实文本意义。围绕种族、性别、他者等后殖民关键词 ,就剧中故事发生地的历史依据所体现的殖民主义象征意义、剧中代表人物蕴涵的殖民话语中东方主义思维方式、被歪曲表征的被殖民者形象、后殖民语境下被殖民者的悲哀四个层面探讨《暴风雨》的殖民主义主题。揭示了普洛斯彼罗代表的西方传统人文主义虚伪的一面 ,指出它在殖民时代所蕴涵的殖民者的霸权本质 ,透视了凯利班象征的被压抑的被扭曲的“东方世界”的文化起因。
