The common interests and marked traits of this group went like following: 1. Those poets emphasized the creation of folk songs and ballads as had been formerly collected by Yuefu (乐府) in the Han dynasty; 2. They were inclined to taking their unique passes in producing poems of rich imagination and marvellous fantasy; besides, they were fond of grotesque diction, pungent sarcasm, pressing rhythm, quickly - shifting images, etc. because they had in herited the sophisticate style represented in on Yuan's Li Sao 《离骚》, some poetical works in the Han, Wei, Qi, Liang dynasties and of Li Po as well as of Du Fu. However, they have brought forth their peculiar poetic style and exerted considerable influence to the poets, such like Li Shangyin, Wen Tingyun, etc., in the late Tang dynasty.

中唐时期,刘言史、庄南杰、李贺等形成一个独立的诗派,这一诗 派的核心人物是李贺。其诗的共同特点:一、重视乐府歌行的创作。二、在艺 术上独辟溪径:极富想象力与幻想力;用词怪异,下语狠重,喜欢翻空出奇; 诗的节奏迫促,意象跳跃,形成超忽动荡、急促旋折的风调。他们远绍屈骚, 中承汉魏齐梁,近效李杜以来一些诗人的部分谲怪之作,兼收并蓄,熔铸贯 通,形成一种独特的诗风。对晚唐李商隐、温庭筠等诗人,有较大的影响。

There is obviously an underlining development from the “modern poems" in the 1930's through the so called “nine leaves" poets in the 40's to the “ambiguity poems" in the 70's or 80's in the modern Chinese poetic history.

李金发是中国象征派诗歌的“开山祖”。他的诗作大量使用象征、比喻、通感、意象,以怪异、神秘、晦涩、颓废被称为“诗怪”,并被当作食洋不化的例证而受到批评,这是不公正的。造成李诗的不被理解以至遭到很多人批评的原因有三:其一,李诗的主题多为死亡、梦境、幻觉及破灭的爱情等,改变了传统诗歌惯用的主题。其二,李诗的内容虽歌咏家国、爱情、艺术、自然等,但大抵歌其悲哀的一面,是消极的。其三,李诗的形式带有明显的欧化痕迹,大量比喻、通感的运用、意象的跳跃,使得解读困难。事实上,李诗在新诗的探索实践中对诗歌艺术有独特贡献,其艺术个性与独创性,在新诗艺术上有深远影响。从20世纪30年代的“现代派”诗歌,到20世纪40年代“九叶”诗人的创作,再到到20世纪70至80年代盛行的“朦胧诗派”,都与之有着血脉联系。可见,李金发的象征主义诗歌不是无病呻吟和毫无意义的,而是具有超前意识和一定价值的作品。

Cao Yu always uses image clusters in a poetical way. He "collects" and "gathers" materials, which seem to be scattered, to seek the result of fully reflecting the deep moral of the materials, Image clusters are very common and of great variety in Cao's dramas. They are confronted with the strong narrations in the dramas and form the internal structure tension of the dramas.
