There are significant differences in plankton densities and P/R ratios among all or part of the microcosms with tilapia, but their primary productivity, final physicochemical condition and fish harvest are about the same. This paper studies the dynamics of N and P in freshwater microcosms with varying densities of Nile tilapia(Oreochromis nil(?)icus). This paper studies the dynamics of N and P in freshwater microcosms with varying densities of Nile tilapia(Oreochromis nil(?)icus). The concentrations of ammonia (NH_3-N), particulate phosphorus (PP) and total phosphorus(TP) in microcosms with Nile tilapia are higher than those in control, but the contents of or thophosphate(PO_4-P) and sediment phosphorus are lower. There are significant differences in measured values of some indices among different density treatments, but none of these indices are found to be regularly changed with stocking density of Nile tilapia. In the microcosms, PO_4-P concentration is significantly correlated with zooplankton and phytoplankton densities and primary productivity, and NH_3-N concentration is related to phytoplankton density. The top -down effect predicted by the trophic cascade hypothesis is not existed between phytoplankton density and TP concentration, but on the contrary, there is a tendency of existing bottom-up effect. The variation of P distribution in the microcosms can reveal the main mechanism of accelerating nutrient cycling in the systems, and thus, enhancing their eutrophication processes by Nile tilapia.

As compared with the controls, the microcosms with fishes were characterized by higher concentrations of particulate phosphorus (PP), total phosphorus (TP) and ammonia (NH3-N), lower orthophosphate (PO4 -P) concentration and smaller quantity of sediment phosphorus at the end of the experiment. Such changes were the greatest and the smallest in the microcosms containing solely bighead carp and solely silver carp (monoculture) respectively, and medium in the microcosms with both species of fish (mixed culture). It has been found that PO4-P concentration was significantly correlated with zooplankton and phytoplankton densities and primary production in the microcosms, and correlations between NH3 -N concentration and the related variables were mostly in the opposite direction to those for PO4 - P concentration. There was the top-down effect predicted by the trophic cascade hypothesis between phytoplankton density and TP concentration during the experiment, but the bottom-up effect occurred between them at the end of the experiment. It was considered that the changes in the nutrient levels (especially for phosphorus) of microcosms resulted primarily from the alterations in their community structure and metabolism intensity caused by silver carp and bighead carp, and it also reflected the effects of fish on nutrient regenerations in the microcosms.
