Spinoza's giving reason for existence of good and bad was to form an idea of man as an ideal type of human providing that nature was ultimate setting of life's good. By discussing the relations of knowledge and morality, the author of this paper explores attempts to disclose possible errors made by modern Chinese scholars in exploring possible approaches to integrating traditional Confucianism with knowledge. According to the author, knowledge and morality are basically different in nature although there is no absolute distinction between them. Man shows his concerns about morality either by cognition or by practice. Each approach has its particular logic, and may develop along the lines of this logic by itself. While the integration of knowledge and morals may be a theoretical issue, their interaction and combination in the real sense only occurs in practice. The accusation that Confucianism “prioritizes morality over knowledge” is just as wrong as the accusation that scientists' pursuit of knowledge as “prioritizes knowledge over morality.” The integration of Confucianism with knowledge is mainly primarily a matter of practice rather than theory. Many modern researchers (particularly Neo-Confucians) seek an approach that integrates traditional Confucianism and the knowledge in Western intellectual traditions from the metaphysical and ontological perspectives. This is due to the fact that they fail to see the relationship between knowledge and morality, and wrongly accuse traditional Confucianism of prioritizing morality over knowledge. As a result, they fail to see the modern integration of Confucian moral traditions with knowledge as a process of self-cultivation and the individual's personal moral practice in maintaining or restructuring the values of the self in the face of the world of knowledge.

文章试图通过厘清知识与道德的关系,来探讨儒家道德传统与知识结合的可能方式。知识与道德代表人类生活中两种不同性质的事物,人们对道德的关怀方式也有认知的和实践的两种,二者遵循不同的逻辑,可以各自独立发展;尽管知识与道德的结合可以是一个理论课题,但是它们之间的真正碰撞和结合只有在实践中才能发生。正像我们不能指责研究知识论就犯了“重知识、轻道德”的错误一样,也不能指责儒学作为一种道德传统犯了“重道德、轻知识”的错误。不少现代学者(特别是新儒家学者)之所以从“形上学”、“存有论”等角度来寻求传统儒学与知识之间的结合,乃是因为他们没有厘清知识与道德的关系,误认为传统儒学犯了重道德、轻知识的错误,而没有把儒家道德传统与知识的现代结合,当做一个现代人在面对知识世界的时候如何确保或重建自身价值的修身功夫和道德实践。
