Danjiangkou multipurpose water control project is exploited in twostages with its early stage works completed in 1973.Various observation instruments and equipments were arranged in the early stage works for dam safety monitoring,and a lot of observed data have been obtained.The final stage works will start soon and the dam safety monitoring design should obey the following principles:(1)Observed results obtained from the early stage works should be sufficiently used.Important monitoring items and locations of their observation points should be adjusted accordung to the constructional characteristics of the final stage works.(2)Observation instruments and equipments for the early stage which are still available should be used as much as possitile,and it is necessary to implement some new instrumemts and apparatus and improve the existing situation.(3)In principle,the monitoring items conducted before should be kept on in the final stage.(4) because of higher reservoir level during the final stage construction,in front of the curtain or in dam foundation zone where seepage is concentrated boreholes drilling should be done with special caution.Arrangements of monitoring apparatus used for observing seepage,stress,strain,temperature and hydraulic parameters,etc.are investigated.Some problems on renewing and improving monitoring apparatus used in the early stage are also discussed.
