This paper sets out to discuss the concept of learner autonomy in second language teaching and learning from a perspective of language awareness. It starts from an investigation of two senses of language awareness (LA) for an explanation of learner autonomy. Next, it addresses the role of LA in both mother tongue and second language learning. The weakness of the grammar translation method and communicative approach in second language teaching and learning is examined in the light of the two senses of LA. Finally, it describes the LA activities carried out with the English majors in the tertiary EFL classroom. Principles underlying the design of such activities are also discussed from a perspective of language awareness and learner autonomy.

本文从语言知觉的角度审视语言教学中自主学习的概念 ,探讨两种含义的语言知觉在母语学习和二语教学中的作用 ,评价语法翻译教学法和交际法的薄弱点 ,描述了为培养高校英语专业学生的自主学习而设计的语言知觉活动 ,并从语言知觉与自主学习关系的角度讨论设置这类活动的指导思想。

The paper analyses the necessity of present students' independent study ability,and states the concept of independent study.Then,it discusses how to train this kind of ability for students from the aspect of language consciousness and illustrates the important task of teachers' in the process of developing students' independent study ability as well.
