However, sulfate could be reduced to hydrogen sulfide which is toxic to the bacteria. When ferrous ion was used to control the concentration of hydrogen sulfide, sulfate did not exert any harmful effect on the removal efficiency of organic matter from the waste water and the gas producing rate, but it caused the gradual decrease of CH4 content in the produced gas and methane yield and the increase of the yield of carbon dioxide as increasing the concentration of sulfate ion.
