A new type of gravity model of cities, F(r,τ)=GR ij (τ)r -D ,was deduced from Reilly-Converse's model, I ij =GQ iQ jr -b ,through introducing time function,Q=f(t),and time-delay parameter,τ,to the latter,and in the former, R ij (τ)=∫f i(t)f j(t+τ) dt is a correlation funtion.The gravity coefficient,G,was defined as the maximum correlation coefficient of the variables Q i and Q j ,and the exponent,b,proved to be a generallized fractal dimension.

The parameters, α and b , are made clear to have some meanings of fractal dimension, and the gravitational ceofficient is defined as G ij =GC iC j|R ij |/(1+S ij ) ,where G is a dimensional transformation coefficient, C is a proportional coefficient, R ij is a coefficient of correlation, and S ij is a coefficient of similarity. The gravitational theory developed by the authors in the paper is applied to the urban system of Changchun in Jilin and the cities of Zhengzhou, Kaifeng,and Luoyang in Henan, China, to show how to use the gravitation models in practice, and based on the examples mentioned above, it is discovered that the resultant of gravitational forces between a city and each of the other cities in an urbon system conforms to the rank size rule in due conditions, i.e., F i(k)=F 1k -q ,where F i=∑jI ij , k is rank, and F 1 and q are parameters.
