The mechanism of deterioration of coke in the blast furnace has been studied. The mechanism of deterioration of coke in the blast furnace has been studied. The reactivity of coke in the lower part of the furnace and the deterioration of coke by the circulating movement in the raceway are the main causes for the production of coke powder. Hot drum test for cokes in several of our large blast furnaces have been made according to the test methods of Oita Works in Japan. Based upon the causes of coke deterioration in the blast furnace and the hot drum test results, it is proposed that the coke for modern ultra large blast furnaces should be made from an appropriate coking coal mixture and with a ash content not more than 12%.
