The changes of ultrastructure of rice straw caused by the fungal attack were investigated with electron microscopy.It was found that the selected mutants had the following favorable features to biopulping:(1)Selectively attack the CML with high lignin content so that intact fibres.are seperated from one another.(2)No obvious thinning of the secondary wall and concomitant celluose degradation occur during the biological delignification.(3)Parenchyma,which is unfavorable to papermaking,is destroyed in early decay.(4)Efficiently degrade lignin in the secondary wall. The influences of physiological parameters on biodelignification processing were systematically investigated.It was found that the biodegradation process could be divided into three stages and confirmed that aeration with oxygen,additional nutrient nitrogen or glucose and moderate moisture in substrate could stimulated and improve the ability of microbial delignification. To study the biodegradation regularities of rice straw lignin,cellulolytic enzyme lignins were isolated from undecayed and also decayed rice straw and characterized by quantitative ~(13)C-NMR spectroscopy.It was concluded that oxidation as a main reaction occured in the macromolecular structure of lignin in biodegradation process,rice straw lignin underwent fungal degradation probably via oxidation cleavage of C_α-C_β bond,C_β-C_γ bond,and aromatic ring and oxidation of C_γ.Evalution of the spectra lead to the conclusion that the order of the fungal degradation was ester-linked coumaric acid unit,guaiacyl unit and syringyl unit and the fungal attack occured in the middle lamella at first which is rich in guaiacyl-type lignin.This conclusion was in accordance with the result obtained by electron microscopy. Bassed on the characteristice of microbial degradation and delignification of rice straw,it was concluded that P.conchatus has great potential application for straw biopulping and other delignification process.

- hydroxybenzaldehyde,vanillin and syringaldehyde etc. were separated on a Novapak C18 column (5μ 3. 9mm i. d.× 150mm) and eluted with MeOH-H2O (25:75, V/V) at a flow rate of 0. 6mL/min and detected at 254nm. It is hoped that results obtained in this study may throw light for the subsequent chlorine-free bleaching.
