    When we use the Event-related potentials (ERP) to study the visual spatial attention, by our directly observation of the visual ERP data, we can get that the main function of spatial attention is the modulation to visual signal processing. Directing attention to the location of a stimulus typically results in an amplitude enhancement of the P1 and N1 components evoked by that stimulus with little or no change in component latencies or scalp distributions.

In this paper, the spatial spectra of neural electric activities and their primary application to visual spatial selective attention are presented. Based on the spherical harmonic spectra inversion by equivalent distributed dipole layer technique, novel latitude spectra S(l) and longitudinal spectra S(m) are defined as the description of spatial spectra of brain electric activities. When the latitude and longitudinal spectra are applied to the event related potentials (ERP) of spatial selective attention to the right and left visual fields, the temporal structures of spatial spectra of all temporal sample points show meaningful delay and amplitude differences of components between100ms and 200ms for attended and unattended stimulus conditions. These facts indicate that the latitude and longitudinal spatial spectra concept is useful in study of cognitive brain research.

OBJECTIVE: To explain the concept of working memory, and sum up and appraise on theoretical models of working memory. DATA SOURCES: We searched the American PsycARTICLES of full-text database for the literatures about the concept and model of working memory published from January 1988 to January 2005, by using the key words of "working memory, model" in English; Also searched the concept and model of working memory publish from January 1986 to January 2005. STUDY SELECTION: Check the data preliminarily, the literatures and original works related to the theme of this article were selected and their full-texts were searched. The standard of selection: the research papers and original works about the concept and model of working memory. The standard of exclusion: The repetitive articles. The articles were not direct connection to the subject. DATA EXTRACTION: 30 articles and 4 original works about the concept and model of working memory were collected. Twenty repetitive or indirect connection research papers were excluded, and 10 research papers and 4 original works were involved. DATA SYNTHESIS: Working memory was a system that could process and store information temporarily with limited capacity. The system offered a delimitation point for perception, long-term memory and its activity, supported the thinking activity of human. The discussion on basic theoretical model of working memory and its application in practice was not only a hot spot in memory research, but also one of the optimal active research topics in cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience at present. The more effective theoretical models had early model of working memory, and the working memory was divided into 3 parts: vision space template, phone ring and central performance system; Late working memory model was the revision and compensation for early working memory model, which added the scene relief area. Some researchers also suggested new models on this basis, for example: embedded processing model and homocentric model, etc. CONCLUSION: The working memory plays an important role in the complicated cognitive action in human beings. Although many research articles have demonstrated early and late working memory model is rather successful, it still has some deficiencies, and needs to be developed and improved.
