Taking the weight gain, food conversionand α-amylase activities of liver-pancreas as evaluation indexes, the results of theexperiment indicate that 36.8-42.27% protein content, 6-12% fat content about 8Kcal/per gram protein calorie--protein ratio (G/P) and 3006-3561 Kcal/Kg in theformulated diet seems suitable. When the total calorie of the formulated diet is givena certain range, the α-amylase activities of liver-pancreas are enhanced with theincrease of carbohydrate content in the diet.

Performances of development and reproduction of the cotton bollworm, Heliothis armi-gera (Hubner), reared on artificial diets with sugar concentration ranging between 8.6% and 35.8% were examined. Higher indices of develop-menrreprocluction of the insert were obtained when the carbohydrate: protein ratio in the diet varied from 1.0 to 2.0, with the best effect at about 1.3. On the other hand, above 28% dietary sugar concentration would cause metabolic stress manifested in prolonged developmental period and decrease in fecundity. The results of the experiments imply that H. armigera requires a diet containing more carbohydrate than protein for better performance and this is in agreement with the feeding behaviour of this species observed in the field.

For two slaughtered goats, their ~(15)N recovery is 73.32 and 56.96%, and loss rate is 26.68 and 43.04% respectively. The ~(15)N recovery of diet is coincided with amino acid digestion rate of it by goats. The digestion rate of carbohydrates in diet by three goats are respectively 76.40, 68. 66 and 65.19%, on an average of 66.93%.
