The grafting of saturated non-ionic surfactants to the membrane is accomplished in a low temperature plasma equipment with pressure 13.0 Pa, N_2 atmosphere and frequency 13.56 MH_2. The groups grafted on the membrane are characterized by IR and XPS. The free radical mechanism of plasma grafting is proposed on the basis of ESR study. The influence of main parameters (plasma treating time, monomer concentration) discharge voltage) on the extent of grafting has been studied. The competition between grafting and etching effects during the plasma treating process is verified.The surface contact angle of polypropyrence membranes toward water is decreased form 108° before grafting to 48° after grafting. The grafted microporous membranes of PP possess good bydrophilicity.
