The spectrophotometric properties for colour system of yttrium (Ⅲ) with 5-Br-PADAP-CPC-emulsifier OP have been Studied. The system exhibits an absorption maximum at 580nm(pH 7.5-9.8). The apparent molar absorptivity is 1.0× 105L. mol-1·cm-1. The composition ratio is Y(Ⅲ):5-Br-PADAP: CPC= 1:4:3, the formation constant is logβ = 9.84. Beer's law is obeyed in the range O-45 μg/50ml. This method has been successfully applied to the determination of trace yttrium in Fe-Cr-Al alloys and ores.

Yttrium reacts with salicylfluorone in a medium of triethanolamine buffer solution (pH7.50) to form a complex, which has a maximum absorption at 555nm. The molar absorptivity is 1.40×10 ̄5L·cm-1.Beer's lawis obeyed over the concentration range 0-8μg of yttrium in 25ml of solution.
