Ecocriticism is a critical movement that arose in the 1990s and is stil l prospering. In this interview, Lawrence Buell, the distinguished Chair Profess or of the English Department, Harvard University, presents a sketch of what ecoc riticism is like and what he believes Chinese scholars will be able to do to con struct its theory. For him, ecocriticism is interdisciplinary, and is usually un dertaken in a spirit of environmental praxis. In its critical perspective, all f orms of discourse can in principle fruitfully be put under the sign of "environ ment", not only the genres focused on the nonhuman world and human nature in c ontact with it. "Environmental crisis" is not just a matter of threat to land or nonhuman life forms but a comprehensively civilizational phenomenon, and the mission of ecocriticism is not so much as to encourage "putting people back in touch with nature" but to instill awareness of the "environmentality" of huma n existence. Buell also feels confident that there must be resources within Chinese art and c ulture that will ensure the likelihood, and that the Chinese ecocritics have the potential to make a distinctive intervention. Confucianism, for instance, provi des significant resources that China potentially has to offer to ecocriticism. F urthermore, China's specific experience with modernization may help Chinese eco critics to make a distinctive contribution.

To the author, Derrida's critical heritage finds particular embodiment in the following aspects: his suspicion and deconstruction of the enclosed structure of literary texts, his stimulating role played in the cultural turn in poststructuralist criticism,...

The present essay offers a critical reflection, from the perspective of literary theory and cultural criticism, the late French philosopher Jacques Derrida's critical theory and the heritage which he has left behind him to contemporary literary theory and criticism. To the author, Derrida's critical heritage finds particular embodiment in the following aspects: his suspicion and deconstruction of the enclosed structure of literary texts, his stimulating role played in the cultural turn in poststructuralist criticism, and his suspicion of the finality of meaning of literary texts and translated texts. All the above have actually paved the way for scholars of the later generation to reconstruct the established theory, the established interpretation and traditional literary canon. In the beginning of the new century, literary theory and cultural criticism have entered a "Post-Derridian Era", in which deconstructive principles have already permeated in all the relevant fields of the humanities although the high time of Derrida and his theory have long been on the decline.

文章从文学理论和文化批评的角度来重新审视法国哲学家、解构主义的代表人物德里达的批评理论特征及其留给当代文学理论和文化批评的遗产。作者认为,德里达留给后人的文学理论遗产主要体现在他对文学本文之封闭结构的质疑乃至拆解,对结构主义批评之后的文化转向的推波助澜和对文学文本和翻译文本之终极意义的怀疑,从而为后人对既定的理论进行重新建构、对前人已有定论的解释以及传统的文学经典进行重新阐释和建构铺平了道路。在新的世纪,文学理论和文化批评进入了一个"后德里达时代",在这一时代,虽然解构的大潮早已衰落,但解构的原则已经深深地渗透到了人文学科的各个相关领域。
