Based on the three hypotheses in relative clause acquisition, this paper investigated the acquisition of four types of relative clauses by Chinese learners of English. The experiment shows that the score of the learners' production of OPREP is higher than that of DO, although the former is more complex than the latter. This paper argues that the phenomenon results from the fact that the structural complexity pushes learners to pay much attention to linguistic form and reprocess it. The experiment also shows that the effect of matrix position on the production of relative clauses is not significant for the learners of higher level of English proficiency. This may be accounted for by the facts that the more proficient learners are more capable of processing meaning and forms, and that they can figure out immediately the head nouns of relative clauses. This helps offset the constraints of center-embedding on production.

本文从关系从句习得研究的三个假设出发,探讨中国学生四种英语关系从句的习得情况。实验结果发现:虽然介宾类关系从句的结构比直接宾语类更复杂,但是它的产出效果反而更好。出现这种情况是因为:语言结构的复杂性促使学习者更关注语言形式并对之进行再加工,从而提高了产出效果。实验结果还发现:关系从句在主句中位置的不同对水平较高的学习者影响不大。原因在于水平较高的学习者对语言形式和意义的加工能力有所提高,在完成任务的过程中能快速而又准确地找到关系从句的中心词,从而克服了从句位置对语言产出的制约作用。

Researches on Second Language Acquisition (SLA)have been the focus of linguists during several decades,which achieved a lot.This paper is trying to classify the errors in the relative clause made by the L2 learners,and then analyze the causes of these errors from the perspective of transfer.

This paper investigated the Accessibility Hierarchy Hypothesis (AHH) by studying Chinese learners, acquisition of English restrictive relative clauses (RCs). Four tasks were performed by two groups of subjects, from high schools and universities respectively. The study yielded the following major findings: (1) The AHH only partially held in some tasks. This paper investigated the Accessibility Hierarchy Hypothesis (AHH) by studying Chinese learners, acquisition of English restrictive relative clauses (RCs). Four tasks were performed by two groups of subjects, from high schools and universities respectively. The study yielded the following major findings: (1) The AHH only partially held in some tasks. The two groups of subjects did not differ significantly in accuracy in producing and comprehending the RCs. But task types significantly influenced their accuracy. (2) The subjects retained pronouns in all the RC types of both production tasks, with varying frequencies in different tasks. (3) The subjects avoided some RC types and replaced them with others. The pattern of avoidance and replacement conformed to the AHH, but was mediated by L2 proficiency and tasks.

本研究通过4项任务探究我国高中生和大学生对英语限制性关系从句的习得,及其与可及性层级假设的关系。结果发现:(1)可及性层级假设只在某些任务中有条件成立。两组受试在产出和理解关系从句方面没有显著差异。不同任务类型对受试使用关系从句的准确度有显著影响。(2)受试在产出型任务的各类关系从句中都保留代词,其频率与任务类型有关。(3)受试所回避关系从句类型的分布规律符合可及性层级假设的预测,并受二语水平和任务类型影响。
