Vanillalrhodanine was found to be an excellent reagent for silver ions. Its 0.2 percent solution in acetone gives a brownish violet precipitate with silver ions in ammoniacal solution. Condensation of sorbic ester with benzaldehyde in the presence of alcohol- free potassium methoxide gives,after hydrolysis,7-phenyl-heptatrienoic acid(m. p.189-190°,to liquid crystals and 199°,to clear liquid).
