    The classic Chinese opera is composite and different in form from the Western drama. Wang Guo-Wei is correct in believing that it is a combination of songs, dances and plays but he is not all-sided. The "opera" and "music" in Han Dynasty have many elements of acrobatics. We should think that this is a good tradition. Since "acrobatics" does not rely on language, it is not confined to a certian nationality and place, thus achieving an effect that mere language, music and dance are incapable of . Yet this tradition...

Yet this tradition has been over-looked for a century, especially, for the past five decades. The article is meant to expose and analyse the issue, suggesting that the tradition be re-adopted to enforce the opera's artictic appeal, and to, win a bigger audience both at home and abroad.

    中国古典戏曲是一种同西方戏剧的形式有较大差异的综合艺术。王国维认为是歌、舞、剧三者的综合,基本上说对了,但仍不全面。因为汉代的“百戏”或“散乐”均带有较多的“杂技”成分。应该说这是一个优良的传统。由于“杂技”表演并不依赖语言,所以其感染力能超越民族、地域等局限,从而产生语言、音乐、舞蹈所不能产生的影响。近百年来,尤其近五十年来,这个优良传统却被忽视了。本文对这个问题进行了探讨和论证,主张恢复这个优良传统,加强戏曲的表现能力,从而能争取一大批国内外的新观众。
