The frequency of firing of LC responded increasingly to microiontophoretically applied acetylcholine (ACh). But application of atropine, the blocker of ACh, decreased the frequency, and prevented the increasing effect of stimulation of HN, which increased the frequency of firing of LC. Microiontophoretical application of physostigmine in most cases increased it. We suggested that ACh might act as transmitter from HN to LC, so that the effect of increased firing of LC with the stimulation of HN was attributed to the increase of ACh release.4. The stimulation of habenular nucleus, perhaps through the intermediate neurons, facilitated the spontaneous firings of LC. Because the habenular nucleus was an important relay from the forebrain to brainstem, the forebrain could modulate the activity of LC through this pathway.
