Fr.is a serious disease of Chinese cabbage in North—eastern China.The results of three years study showed that the primary infection of the dis- ease came from the oospores in overwintering leaves and the seeds pro- duced by infected plants.It was demonstrated,through artificial inoculation of cabbage growing on soil with counted oospores,or through raising seed- lings from infected seeds,that systemic invasion of hypocotyls and cotyle- dons took place.The mycelia were intercellular in the host tissue,with intracellular haustoria being observed.It was assumed that perennial my- celia were inside the seeds.The percentage of seed transmission of suscep- tible cultivars was rather high. In laboratory tests,oospores germinated successfully at 25℃.The oos- pores had to be washed with running water 7-9 days before germination took place,and contamination was controlled in the incubation period by furaldehyde(100μl/1). When the leaf was inoculated with conidia and cultured in vitro for infection process observation,intercellular hyphae and haustoria were also clearly witnessed.“Culture in vitro”method was effective in maintain- ing pathogens up to 20 days.
