A method of measuring rock fracture toughness with Brazilian disc specimen having a central hole is suggested.First,the sufficient condition for the specimen fracture initiating at the intersection point between the loading diameter and the edge of the central hole is determined according to Griffith fracture criterion;then the maximal dimensionless stress intensity factor ( Y  max ) of Brazilian disc specimen with a newly cut flat surface at two opposite sides is calibrated by 2 D BEM;and the minimal load value ( P min ) is obtained from load vs load point displacement curve;thus the method for measuring rock fracture toughness is established.A lime rock fracture toughness is estimated by this method coincides satisfactorily with the standard value ( K ⅠC ) determined by a chevron notch specimen method recommended by International Society for Rock Mechanics(ISRM).Furthermore,this method can effectively measure the fracture toughness of isotropic rock materials.

The liquid metal--induced embrittlement(LME) of 7075 aluminum alloy byGa was investigated by using modified WOL notched specimen. The results showed that the adsorption of Ga atoms could facilitate localized plastic deformation of the base metal and there was an observable concave plastic zone around the notch tip. Then a microcrack would initiate when the adsorption -- facilit at ed plastic deformation reached to a crit ical condit ion. The threshold stress intensity factor of LME under the applied tensile...

When the specimen was loaded in the opposite direction(the displacement V <0),a microcrack would initiate in the tensile stress zone away from the notch tip. The microcrack would propagate towards tensile stress zone and arrest at compressive stress zone. The nominal threshold stress intensity factor for the inverse loading was 3.5 MPa'm1/2. The fracture surfaces of LME for all the specimens were intergranular.
