The electrochemical reduction of 5-nitrouracil(5NU) has been investigated on Ag-Hg cathode in DMSO by cyclic voltammetry, controlled potential electrolysis, combined with UV and ESR spectroscopy. The results indicated that 5NU could be reduced to 5-hydroxaminouracil and simultaneously participated in the reaction as a proton donor. The 5NU anion was reduced at a more negative potential, some ESR parameters of the free radical which was generated in the reduction and the kinetic constant for the reaction have been determined experimentally. The mechanism for the reduction of 5NU has been proposed according to the results.
