Described in this paper are a test rig and a data acquisition and analysis system. An analysis of the seal gas flow excitation mechanism provides a theoretical basis for the selection of the cut-off frequency of a filter and the sampling frequency of the data acquisition system. The study focuses on the test results of five groups of different types of seal construction with the piping transmission characteristics in the course of gas flow dynamic pressure measurement being discussed. The contrast tests of smooth seals, labyrinth and honeycomb seals have demonstrated the seal gas clearance pulsation spectrum is a discrete one. The highest monopeak has been observed in the smooth seal spectrum with the lowest multi-peak appearing in the honeycomb seal. The inner surface of the honeycomb seal is characterized by a high roughness, which aggravates the air flow disturbance and induces a multi-peak spectrum, contributing to energy dissipation and achieving the goal of suppressing seal gas flow excitation.The contrast test results of various honeycomb seals have demonstrated that the air flow excitation is the least for labyrinth\|disk/honeycomb\|stator seal..

Brush seals have been used in aircraft engines,industry gas and steam turbines,becoming a kind of key technologies in developing modern advanced turbines.Brush seals can remain seal clearances unchanged after rotor's moment large scale radial moving.Compared with a conventional finned labyrinth seal, the brush seal offers a dramatic improvement by five to ten times in sealing and a decrease by about two percent in engine fuel oil consumption ratio.In additions,brush seals can provide better rotordynamic characteristics.The bristle is a kind of fine metal thread with a diameter of 0.05~0.07?mm,whose free ends contact with shaft surface.In general,the bristle material is Cobalt\|based alloy such as Haynes 25.The bristles run against a hard ceramic shaft coating such as ZrO 2.The shaft surface speed and operating temperature that brush seals can endure have increased to more than 305?m/s and 690℃ respectively.The rules of how brush geometries effecting sealing have been investigated by long period performance test. The random array effective thickness brush model is a semi empirical model, which has established the relationship among brush geometries, working condition parameters and the sealing performance. The model can be used to optimize brush seal designs and estimate the quality of brush seals.
