The author investigated the nature, components, purposes and functions of word level processing in reading. The experimental findings evidenced the relationship among the ability to process word, the comprehension at the local level and at the global level in reading, indicating the significance of comprehending words' lexical meaning, functional meaning, contextual meaning, and extended meaning. The conclusion is that comprehension at the word level should not be neglected in EFL reading instruction.
