Experimental results show that the optimum mass ratio for the esterification is m (methyl alcohol)/ m (raw material) =2. The conversion of fatty acids increased with the temperature when the temperature is below the boiling point of methanol. The conversion increases with time as well, but the increasing rate tends become slow. The conversion is about 82% reacting at 60℃ for 56 min. It is concluded that fatty acid methyl esters can be continuously prepared in a fixed bed reactor from PODD.

The dimension of fixed bed reactor was Φ1.62cm×72.7cm. Experimental results showed that the optimum weight ratio for the esterification was n(alcohol)/n(PFAD)=13.2; Keeping esterification temperature within normal boiling point of alcohol, the higher the temperature, the greater the yield of fatty acid ethyl ester. The yield are more increasing when catalytic esterification time are long, but this increasing rate is slow and slow. Under normal atmosphere, react 55min at 75℃ , one-step yield of fatty acid ethyl ester is about 76%.
