In contrast, objects and things in fiction of the Ming Dynasty are usually closely associated with themes so that inherent rules of characterization can be followed and profound significance...

Such stage properties were seen to be so attractive everywhere that occasionally they would attract a large audience. Male and female leading characters would be preoccupied with it, which was the result of their empathy. In contrast, objects and things in fiction of the Ming Dynasty are usually closely associated with themes so that inherent rules of characterization can be followed and profound significance sought. This paper analyses the symbols and plots of Pearl Shirt , Box of Treasures , and Night Pearl , discusses the soil into which the best stories and novels in Ming Dynasty are deeply rooted, and confirms the fact that becoming rich by engaging in business was regarded as an indicator of great success and that the pursuit of personal happiness was considered to be quite reasonable. All the leading characters either travelled long distance to transport and sell goods, or operated small businesses supported by a small capital. Handsome husband and beautiful wife treated each other with courtesy and lived a rich life full of true feelings.

明代戏曲习用道具为剧目。此类道具以随意拈来,偶然入戏者为多。男女主人公为之魂牵梦萦,其实也只是移情作用。明代小说中的物品却常与主题思想丝丝相扣或互为表里,对人物塑造亦有内在规律可循、深层意义可求。本文分析三言两拍中“珍珠衫”、“百宝箱”、“夜明珠”的象征性和情节性,并进而论证明代小说之佳作根植于深厚的市民生活的土壤,已视经商致富为成功标志,个人幸福为合理追求。其主角或长途贩运,或小本经营,或举案齐眉,或红杏出墙,都过着真实而丰富的感情生活,不落才子佳人的俗套。

Li Zuo wu annotated "A Tale of the West Wing",but the existing copies with Li's annotation are all forged. The Rong Yu Tang edition was made by Ye Zhou. However, Ye's annotation is of great literary criticism value and his theory concerning the characters remained outstanding in the criticism of traditional Chinese opera throughout the Ming Dynasty. Ye's annotation exerted great influence toward the end of the Ming Dynasty and was only obscured later by Jin Sheng tan.

李卓吾批点过《西厢记》 ,但现存的李批《西厢》都是伪本。容与堂本乃叶昼所伪托。但叶昼的批点富有文学批评价值 ,特别是他的人物论在整个明代戏曲理论批评中比较突出。叶昼的批点在明末产生了很大的影响 ,直到金圣叹出 ,他的批评才相形失色
