This paper treats of the theory of elastic contact problems and presents a process of computation by matrix condensation of the finite element method. The author has brought the theory of elastic contact to a better completion by raising the convergency of the contact problem. A method of classified loading in computation is also introduced. The application of these theories to the design of combustion chamber parts gives a scientific datum to the betterment of the strength of these parts.

Based on the engine vibration character induced by the piston impact on the cylinder, it is practical to judge the clearance condition between them by engine surface vibration intensity. From the characteristics of vibration signals obtained experimentally under the different operating conditions, some methods to judge the wear and scuffling conditions of the piston and cylinder are herewith brought out.

This article describes in the fields of excitation and response the vibration characteristics (including natural parameters, applied force properties and dynamical behavior) of the cylinders of diesel engines. As a result, some variations in cylinder vibration parameters are obtained under the circumstances of the abnormal operation of pistons and cylinders. These variations are useful for the fault diagnosis and other engineering purposes.
