PWM-induced IFN-r was partially purified to a spe. act. of 106 RU/mg protein by batch adsorption on controlled-pore glass (CPG) beads and desorption by ethylene glycol in PBS.Use of native-made micro-pore glass(MPG)instead of CPG to purify IFN-r showed similar purification efficacy.Both CPG and MPG recovered could be regenerated for repeated use.The yield from glass beads was further purified to a spe.act.of 107 RU/mg protein, with about 78%recovery, by the anti-new-born calf serum antibodies-Sepharose 4B(ACS)column chromatography.Almost all the antiviral activity induced by PWM or esculentoside was destroyed by pH 2 or heat at 56℃ and neutralized by monoclonal antibody against HuIFN-r, thereby identified as HuIFN-r. Bio-Gel P-200 chromatography resulted in two peaks of activity for PWM-induced IFN, a major one with molecular weight of 40,000-45,700 and a minor one of 25,700 dalton, but only one peak with molecular weight of 45,700-49,000 for esculentoside-induced IFN.

A series of hydrophobic interaction chromatographic stationary phases based on controlled pore glass have been developed. The ligand was polyethylene glycol(PEG) with different degree of polymerization, such as PEG 400, 600,800,1000, and 2000. Chromatographic conditions used for the separation of biopolymer were evaluated. This packing is suitable for the separation of protein with high recovery of bioac-tivity.

Several mesomorphic functionalized ladderlike polysiloxanes(LDPS)are presented.They are including:"fishbonelike"liquid crystalline polymers(FBLCPs)containing β-dike-tone,imine azo-three types of mesogenic side chains and corresponding metal-coordinating LCPs,and chromophore-bearing nonlinear optical(NLO)LDPS.They have been synthesized via hydrosilylation reaction from reactive polyhydro-silsesquioxane or its copolymers and functional monomers.Polymer network liquid crystal(PNLC) composites composed of FBLCP and low mass liquid crystal exhibited interesting electro- optical behavior:"positive"or "negative"effects depending on the"anchoring effect"and elastisity.The poled thin film of ladderlike NLO polymers demonstrated stable poling induced orietation.One of the common morphological feature of thesemesomorphic LDPSs is birefrigent light bands which are stable at elevated temperature.Sizecontrollable cage- like supermolecular self-assemble membrane and its molecular level hybrid with organic molecules is another development based on the“ stepwise coupling polymerization”.
