The constrained optimization of a batch reactor described by ordinary differentialequations is different from that of parameters of a general continuous reactor. It may be considered as the optimization of controlling variables in optimalcontrol. In this paper the Pontryagin's maximum principle using a constrainedgradient method is employed to solve this problem. For erythromycin biosynthesis in biochemical engineering, examination calcula-tion were made to determine simultaneously optimal temperature and pH profiles.The final concentration of erythromycin (i. e., the product desired) so obtained at theoptimal conditions T(t) and pH(t) is about 30% higher than obtained at the constantones [T(t)=32 and pH(t)=6. 8], and it is also true for the conditions of linearlydescending temperature and pH. These are in good agreement with those presentedin literature. The simulation calculations on a computer show that this method is rapid (theoptimal solution is obtained after several iterations or decades of seconds), stable (thedifferent initial temperatures and pH profiles always coverge to the same optimalprofile), and effective for the constrained optimization of a batch reactor.

The subject is dealt with in three parts: static computation and programming of ethylene tower, dynamic computation and programming of ethylene tower and presentation of an automatic regulation system for the ethylene tower. Each part begins with an introduction of theory, followed by ciation of example, operations of programming and verification of theory with computation. For easy illustration, only one and the same example is used for all the three parts.
