By using simple symmetry arguments, a phenomenological Landau free energy density expansion is derived in terms of the tensorial order parameter.The application of the Landau-de Gennes theory is then illustrated in three areas: the calculation of thermodynamic properties of the nematic-isotropic phase transition, the study of bulk nematie response to external disturbances, and the description of fluctuation and interfacial...

This paper reviews the phenomenological and microscopic theories of nematie liquid crystals. By using simple symmetry arguments, a phenomenological Landau free energy density expansion is derived in terms of the tensorial order parameter.The application of the Landau-de Gennes theory is then illustrated in three areas: the calculation of thermodynamic properties of the nematic-isotropic phase transition, the study of bulk nematie response to external disturbances, and the description of fluctuation and interfacial effects. The discussion on the microscopic theories of nematie liquid crystals is divided into two sections: one on theories based on steric repulsive interaction and the other on theories based on attractive interaction between the molecules. It is shown that whereas each type of theory illuminates some aspects of the physics underlying the existence of the nematie order, neither can give a comprehensive understanding of the nematie liquid crystalline state and its transition into the isotropic phase. The paper concludes by pointing out some unresolved problems and the probable direction for their solution.

Degenerate four-wave mixing effect due to thermally induced index grating is studied in liquid crystal MBBA. By measuring the relaxation time of the thermal grating decay, we obtain the diffusion coefficient of MBBA in its isotropic phase, i.e., D = 8.6×10-4 cm·s-1 at T = 45.1℃.

A theory is presented to transfer the statistics of two-dimension liquid crystal polymers into a diffusion equation with the Mathieu function as the eigenfunction, and then to discuss their conformation and ordering. It is demonstrated that the two-dimension polymers normally behave rod -like in nematic phase(N), but random walk in isotropic phase(I). The rod-like and random walk transition accompanies the N-I transition which is of first-or- der at temperature of 8/9. with corresponding order parameter of 1/3....
