The diameters of the burrows range from 2 to 2. 5 mm, and exhibit only minor change in dimension along their length. An attempt has been made to speculate the organism that is presumably responsible for Shamuangichnus diatomus, which may probably be the representative of Oligocheata worms.

The world renowned Miocene Shanwang lacustrine konservat lagersttte,occurring in the Shanwang Formation in Linqu County, Shandong Province, represents an extraordinarily well preserved and taxonomically highly diverse fossil biota. Over the past 60 years, more than 700 fossil species belonging to more than 400 genera have been reported from a thickness of 30 m diatom shales, including fungi, diatoms, higher plants, ostracods, insects, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and trace fossils. This paper focuses on the relationship between the fossil biota and their physical environments with special emphasis on fossil taphonomy and palaeoecological factors, such as palaeoclimates, palaeotemperature, palaeolatitude, palaeogeography, and palaeolimnology. Palaeohydrology of the Miocene Shanwang lake, such as seasonal changes, food web, and depositional history are also discussed.
