Investigations have shown that the ancient city of Wuhu started to be built in Ming Dynasty in 1575 and it took six years to complete the construction. About thirty historical and cultural sites of various kinds have so far been preserved within the ancient city ( some of them had to do with famous people in the history ). Among them, major sites are the architecture of Ancient Times and Modern Times, the ancient inscriptions on tablets and the traditional street networks formed in Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the year of 2000, the municipal authorities decided to reconstruct the ancient city within the original site, and try every effort to ensure that those historical and cultural heritage will be effectively protected, well explored and utilized in order to make Wuhu well-known as one of the Excellent Tourist Cities of China.

经调查,芜湖古城始建於明代万历三年(公元1575年),费时六年完成的明代芜湖城。城区内现保存的各类文物资源近30余处(有些资源与我国历史上名人有关联)。主要有古代、近代建筑、古碑刻以及由南门湾、花街、南正街、儒林街和肖家巷组成的明清传统街道网。2000年,市政府决定恢复建设“芜湖古城”,力争做到有效保护和合理地开发利用。建设好芜湖古城,打响“全国优秀旅游城市”这块牌子。
