Meaning, properties and the application range of two energy consumption evaluation indexes commonly used in refinery i.e, composite energy resource consumption amount a ton of crude oil (CETC) and composite energy resource consumption amount a ton of crude oil and a energy factor (CETCF) have been analyzed and compared together with the relations between CETCF and energy resource density index. It is pointed out that CETC is independent of energy utilization level and it cannot be used to compare the energy consumption between refineries. CETCF is a scientific and reasonable energy consumption evaluation index and can be used in the energy consumption comparison between refineries and combination units. If the standard energy consumption level of an evaluation system is advanced, the practical energy utilization level of a refinery is respectively very good, good and poor when its CETCF is less than, equal to or greater than the standard energy consumption index of atmospheric and vacuum distillation unit.
