Physical,chemical and mode-locking properties of pentamethylidyne dye for mode-locking in Nd~(3+) lasers are given.Several factors which affect the stability of the dye solution with 1,2-dichloroethane as solvent have been found.A method for increasing the stability of the dye solution is presented.Pentamethylidyne dye is proved to be a good and inexpensive dye for mode- locking as comparedwith undecamethylidyne.

The laser induced damage thresholds in some silicate and phosphate glasses at the fundamental, second harmonic and third harmonic of neodymium laser wavelegnth have been measured. It is found that the damage thresholds sharply decrease as the laser wavelength shortens. This experimental result shows that the laser induced damage in these optical materials is dominated by multiphoton ionization mechanism.

The transient SES double Stockes-line in ethylene glycol by using the picosecond pulse train generated by a Nd-glass laser system with frequency doubling KDP crystal is described. The central wavelengthes of the double Stockes lines are 6246.5A and 6288.64 A respectively. The double Stockes lines are included by the symmetric and asymmetric vibrations of (OH)2 group of ethylene glycol. SES double lines coinside with Raman spectrum of HO·CH2·OH2·OH quite well.
