Based on these results, an explanation is given for the reduction of the cutting force when coated inserts are used. Our experimental results showed that the specific cutting force of TiC coated inserts is smaller than that of uncoated inserts by 3-4%,and the specific cutting force of TiN and TiC/TiN coated inserts showed a decrease of 6-9%. The frictional coefficients between the coated inserts and chips, and chip shortening coefficients are also decreased correspondingly when using coated inserts.With longer machining period,difference between the cutting forces (using coated as against uncoated inserts) becomes even more marked. The conclusions favour a wider application of coated carbide tools.

Using a limiting cutting speed as criterion to assess machinability (30s tool life) it was found that although hardness was important, there was a strong influence from the microstructure of the workpiece. This was particularly significant when workpieces heat treated to give different microstructures but of similar hardness exhibited different machinabilities. The best machinability using the maximum speed criterion was for a fully spheroidised microstructure (92 m min~(-1)) whereas partially spheroidised and hot rolled specimens of similar hardness could only be cut at maximum speeds of 76 m min~(-1) aud 69 m min~(-1), respectively. This suggests that comparative machinability at a given hardncss level is influenced by the morphology of the carbides in pearlitic or tempered martensitic steels and their relative tendency to dissolution during the cutting process.
