The Yellow sea and the East China sea tectonically belong to the activated diwa region, which can be divided into the Yellow Sea diwa system, the East China Sea diwa system and the Okinawa marginal sea diwa system. The Yellow Sea diwa system developed from a platform setting and has undergone three stages: the initial-mobility period (end of T—K_2), the maximum-mobility period (K_2—E) and the residual-mobility period (N—Q). The East China Sea diwa system developed from the Paleozoic and Mesozoic geosynclinal folded zone, and has undergone three stages: the fault-depression of the initial-mobility period (K_2—E), the sag of the maximum-mobility period (Miocene) and the regional subsidence of the residual-mobility period (Plio- cene—Q). The Okinawa marginal sea diwa system is an activated region developed during Miocene time. There are obvious sea floor spreading and clear spreading graben valley in this region. The crust thins and belongs to transitional crust from continent to ocean. It is a young marginal sea diwa region with active tectonic movements, intense volcanic activities, obvious zone of volcanic rocks, comagmatic rocks and high thermal flow. The formation and development of the Yellow Sea diwa system was influenced mainly by thermal activity of deep mantle matter in East China. The East China Sea diwa system was controlled by the development of the southeast China diwa system in the early stage. Later it was influenced by the formation and development of the Ryukyu island arc. It was the result of composite effects of diwa and plate tectonics. The Okinawa marginal sea diwa region was mainly controlled by the subsiding movements of the Pacific plate. The marginal sea diwa region and the plate tectonics show coincidence in activation time, close spatial relatlonship, and similarity in mechanism of formation, both related to deep activities.

Three major transgressive and two regressive processes can be seen in vertical sequecnce. Affected by various factors, different sedimentary facies occur at different districts in this depression. Oil and gas generation and accumulation are closely related to the sedimentary facies.
