The paper makes a study for speech quality evaluation of digital speech communication systems by means of a 2400 bit/s digital channel vocoder. Speech articulation tests are carried out under several transmission conditions including: 1. speech signal via LP 3400 Hz filter, 2. speech signal via LP 3400 Hz filter first and then a PCM system, 3. speech signal via 2400 bit/s vocoder, 4. speech signal via 2400 bit/s vocoder, but with different sources of excitation (A. only with white noise, B. with triangular pulse...

The paper makes a study for speech quality evaluation of digital speech communication systems by means of a 2400 bit/s digital channel vocoder. Speech articulation tests are carried out under several transmission conditions including: 1. speech signal via LP 3400 Hz filter, 2. speech signal via LP 3400 Hz filter first and then a PCM system, 3. speech signal via 2400 bit/s vocoder, 4. speech signal via 2400 bit/s vocoder, but with different sources of excitation (A. only with white noise, B. with triangular pulse train whose fundamental frequency varies with the pitch of speech input, C. triangular pulse train with fixed fundamental frequency). A comparative study is made between the sound articulation of digital systems and that of analogous systems. The results show that: 1. the degradation of the speech quality in digital speech signal processing systems is mainly due to lower consonant articulation; 2. In order to evaluate and diagnose the quality of various speech sounds transmitted by speech signal processing systems, more testing lists are required; 3. the statistical relation between articulation score of different language units established by analogous systems is also applicable to digital systems in case the structure of speech signal not being destroyed; 4. comparative studies between the performances of digital and analogous speech signal processing systems are conducive to detecting the causes of degradation of the speech quality in digital processing system.
