The stress—strain curves of quartzite, granite, granodiorite, gabbro, basalt and marble from different sites of China are measured under confining pressure up to 750Mpa (7.5Kb), using a triaxial experimental apparatus with lead as confining pressure medium. The relationships between compressive strength, residual compressive strength and confining pressure are established. The possibility of estimating the compressive strength of rocks under high confining pressure based on its uniaxial compressive strength, the tendency of rock frictional constant so to be larger under the condition of solid confining medium, and the criteria for brittle—ductile transition of rocks are discussed.

The experimental data coincide well with the calculated results from these formulas. For constant proportional geometry with varied specimen diameter and length, the deviations between prediction and measuements of uniaxial tension and compression are 0.3% and 3.9% respective- ly, and for frature toughness is less than 2.2%. These researchs indicate that the Weibull Theorem is fully appropriate for explaining the scale effect of Bohai sea ice.
